I understand this 1962 VW Split Screen Camper Van had been rusting away in a farmers field for eight years before it was dscovered by a friend of mine. My friend knew I was looking for a VW split screen Camper Van for a restoration project. The rescued VW Split Screen Camper Van became a painting in 1996, called The Find, while I was waiting for a professional welder to restore some of the structure before I took on the rest of the restoration myself.

This had always been a dream of mine so I painted it in my dream situation... the perfect find... a rusty old 1962 VW Split Screen Camper Van waiting to be saved, overlooking a secret surf spot waiting to be ridden.

The original piece, which I painted using designer gouache on stretched cartridge paper, took around 40 hours to complete. Click here to see the movie of the painting's detail.
